History – Niaouli

Traditional Usage

There are records of Indigenous people using fresh Niaouli tree leaves to treat affected areas of the body.

Early European Usage

Niaouli trees were sporadically wild harvested for the medicinal benefits of the essential oil found in the fresh leaves and branchlets. Also bee hives were located near blossoming Niaouli trees for honey production.

Present day Usage

Today, Niaouli essential oil is used by aromatherapists for its intensely refreshing and calming properties. It also has been used in perfumery, hair care products to relieve itchy scalp, and in laundry liquids to get rid of blanket infestations. Also, honey is still being obtained from the Niaouli tree.
