Byron Bay and Byron hinterland, the home of Essentially Australia

About Us

Essentially Australia laid down its present day origins in April 1998, when creator, Greg Trevena after several years of researching and wild harvesting, established a native Australian subtropical rainforest plantation (which included such things as Lemon Myrtle, Anise Myrtle, Lillipillis, native Tamarinds and more) ┬ájust 20 kilometres from Byron Bay, a place located at Australia’s most easterly point. Byron Bay is world renown as a place for natural beauty, healthy living and natural healing.

By the 1980’s after 200 years of European settlement, only 1 Australian food plant had been commercially developed (The Macadamia). In addition only Tea Tree and Eucalyptus essential oils had been commercially developed. Indigenous people across all parts of Australia, such as the monsoonal north, the dry ‘Outback’, the forested east coast all had a regular supply of healthy food and medicines. In addition they found these things throughout the different seasons of the year.

From here commenced a journey for founder, Greg Trevena, of exploring and researching what Australia’s native plants had to offer. This was followed by formulating a variety of products involving native plants. Byron Bay proved to be an excellent launching ground as the region is rich in nature, this coupled with overseas and interstate tourists, plus the supportive local population made a great initial market.

Australia’s natural plant offerings are great and plenty, we welcome you to learn more about us and our unique and powerful native Australian plants.
